Luceting

Luceting is a technique used in cord making and braiding. The cord made can often be used for decoration, belts or to hang items from the belt including bags.

They are often carved out of wood, but in some rare occasions were bone. They have two prongs with a central hole for the cord to thread through.

Wool is usually the best media for luceting, however, finer cord (such as for lower status jewellery) can be created using embroidery thread. To check you have high quality wool (low plastic content), simply burn then end of it. High quality wool will catch fire and smoke, where as low quality wool will melt due to the plastic content.

While at first it can be difficult to start, luceting becomes very easy after practice and is a useful skill to know, particularly for making things around camp.

There is a quick tutorial video here: How to Lucet

However, if you want to try luceting or are struggling Frigg, Isgurd, Brynhilda and Gytha all lucet, so don’t be afraid to ask them! 🙂
