The spear was a very versatile weapon. Every warrior would have had a spear, from the lowest soldier to the highest lord. It’s a cheap and easy weapon to make. A single handed spear would have been used in the opening period of a battle, this would have been used to trust from a difference or for second rank fighters. The spear is also used in a two handed form, however this is normally a higher status weapon due to the need of a longer head and therefore more metal. Another use for a spear would to be thrown in the opening stages of the battle. As Mail became more prevalent spears become thinner to pierce mail. The evolution of the spear also ended up with the longer lance used on horseback predominantly by the Normans.
